India that is 'Bharat'

Writer: Ashwani DubeyAshwani Dubey

Recent invitations addressed to the dignitaries of the upcoming G20 Summit were issued under the President/ Prime Minister of 'The Republic of Bharat'. This sparked speculations regarding the agenda of the forthcoming special session of Parliament requested by PM Modi to change India's official name to Bharat.

Is it even necessary? Isn't India already called Bharat as per Article 1 of the Constitution of India, which reads, "India that is Bharat to be union of states..."

While we speculate, that calling India 'Bharat' will remain symbolic and ornamental, and there is no need to officially change the country's name to increase inconvenience, yet it will be interesting to see the events unfolding in our Indian Polity regarding the Official Name.
